Once voicemail is active on your service, Optus texts you a random default PIN. Open the phone app, call 321, and have that PIN handy for the first-time setup.
The prompts walk you through changing your PIN (up to 9 digits, no sequential numbers like 1234 or repeats like 1111), recording your name, and recording your greeting. Finish the tutorial in full — the mailbox isn't properly set up until you do.
Any time after setup, dial 321, press 8 for user options, then 3 to change your greeting. This is where you record a new personal greeting or switch back to the standard one.
Speak your greeting after the tone, then follow the prompts to listen back, re-record, or save. Keep it between 15 and 25 seconds — long enough to sound professional, short enough that callers stay on the line.
Already have a greeting and want to replace it? Dial 321, press 8 then 3, and record a new greeting — it overwrites the old one as soon as you save. You can change it as often as you like, which is handy for annual leave or public holiday messages.

Voicemail diversions are set on the Optus network when your mailbox is activated, but your handset's own divert settings also matter — if calls aren't reaching voicemail, check call forwarding in your phone's settings first. iPhone users on supported Optus plans also get Visual Voicemail in the Phone app, which lists messages on screen and includes a greeting recorder under Voicemail → Greeting.
