The first time you call, you'll choose a security code, record your name, and set your time zone — and if you stay on the line, the prompts take you straight into personalising your greeting. Note that the initial setup can only be done from your own Vodafone mobile. The prompts walk you through selecting a voicemail security code (you'll need it to check messages from another phone), recording your name for the standard greeting, and choosing your time zone by selecting your state.
Once the basic setup is done, don't hang up — the prompts continue to greeting personalisation, notification preferences, and security code settings. To reach greetings later, dial 121, press 2 for settings, then 1 for your personal greeting.
Speak your greeting after the tone and press # to save, then follow the prompts to listen back or re-record. Keep it between 15 and 25 seconds — long enough to sound professional, short enough that callers stay on the line.
Already have a greeting and want to replace it? Dial 121, follow the menu to greeting options (press 2 for settings, then 1), and record a new greeting — it overwrites the old one as soon as you save. You can change it as often as you like, which is handy for annual leave or public holiday messages. You can also manage voicemail settings in the My Vodafone app.
Once your mailbox is set up, you can check messages from another phone by calling 0414 121 121 (or +61 414 121 121 from overseas). Enter your mobile number and your voicemail security code when prompted, and you'll get the same menu as at home. This is why it's worth setting a memorable security code during setup — do it before you travel.
Messages are stored for 10 days or until you delete them — archive anything important within the voicemail menu. By default Vodafone notifies you of new messages, and you can change the notification method in the voicemail settings. If calls aren't diverting to voicemail, dial 1211 to reset the standard diversions (unanswered, switched off, out of coverage, or engaged) — or dial 1213 to cancel diversions entirely so missed calls simply ring out. iPhone users on Vodafone also get Visual Voicemail in the Phone app, with a greeting recorder under Voicemail → Greeting.
